Don Orione, founder of The
Sons of Divine Providence, first declared his intention to see the work
of the Order expanded to England in the year 1899.
Countries
which are chosen in his lifetime by the founder of a religious order
for special endeavour always assume a particular significance.
In 1935 Don
Orione sent priests to Cardiff and Swansea to work with the Italian
workers in the coal mines of that region. The first Italian priests sent out by the
founder were Fr. Gaetano Piccinini, Fr. Luciano Pesce Maineri and Fr.
Hadrian Calegari but
the onset of World War II cut short the work and they returned to Italy. |
